I think you nailed it Jack. The difference between Orrin Keepnews and Rudy Van Gelder was that Orrin gave the artists the freedom to play what they wanted to play. Rudy always had a specific vision for his work and the players gave him what he wanted. The result for me is that Orrin's work has a lot of spontaneity. I like that.
