Wish I could have done that ...

I proposed exactly that to my ex.

No way, no how was she going to hammer it out with me. She didn't trust me. She wanted lawyers and had her sights set on nailing me to the cross.

Thankfully, she agreed to a process referred to as "cooperative", where the two of you and your lawyers hammer it out and it doesn't go to litigation unless the four of you fail to come to terms.

To the OP, you may be able to keep whatever you want, depending on how little cash you want and that there is cash or other assets to offset what you want. For instance, I kept the house and my wife got the value of the equity of the house in cash. We then split the rest of the cash, assets, furniture, etc. I think most wives would prefer cash to a stereo.

We lived together throughout the seven month process and for one month after the divorce. I took the high road throughout the entire process, never once raising my voice or even approaching the brink of being nasty. My wife made things as difficult as possible and it was the worst eight months of my life.

Seven months later all is good. I love my new life, except when my dealing with my ex, which I will have to do until my son graduates college. Thanks to having a very savvy, female lawyer, I did fine and have no regrets.

I am very jealous of folks who can sit down with their wives and hammer something out with civility and no lawyers. I am even more jealous of divorced couples who can still be friendly. That would be my wish.

My divorce cost me $15K. I'd love to have that money back.

Dean.
