For me, the benefit of being able to access any part of my digital library instantaneously from several systems is hardly a short term gain. It greatly enhances my enjoyment and allows me to spend more time listening than shuffling disks in and out of cases and players.
Drives used daily may well only last five years in operation, but replacement cost is incredibly low. I've yet to have a drive failure in over fifteen years of use, but then I've migrated my data to higher capacity drives along the way. On the other hand, I have four USB drives that are each used about an hour per month for backup purposes only. They should last considerable longer given the miminal use and absence of heat related issues.
Solid state memory is continuing to get denser and less expensive. I can put my entire library on a 256 GB flash drive that costs under $100. Reliability issues of spinning rust disappear in that world.
CD media most certainly doesn't last forever. It gets scratched over time and starts skipping!
