I buy used models which interest me, and sell them on a few months later if it doesn't better my current fave.
I have found some amplifiers require up to a month to 'settle' with some speakers, so I give them a fair crack of the whip before deciding.
My Cambridge 840a sounded quite sharp and a little brittle for the first week or so, but after a couple of weeks sounded musical, muscular and airy! Amazing contrast.
