Sam, I'm sorry to hear about the potential strife with your previous employer.
One day I hope to hear the details because I know a lot of people put a lot of trust (even potentially blind trust) in others and that's not always a good thing.

Since everything and everyone has limits, would it not be more accurate to say,
"Ultimately -- morally, at least -- it is an editor's responsibility to do everything REASONABLY possible to make sure his (or her) writers are being paid for what was published."?
Also, you said, "The covenant between editors and writers is almost a sacred trust."
I'm curious why a covenant of "an almost sacred trust" is necessary between an editor and its writers?
