I've listened to several streaming internet stations, many of which offer your choice of bit-rate, MP3, or AAC. I have found that AAC at a given bit-rate always sounds better to me than MP3. Similarly AAC at a lower bit-rate can sound as good as MP3 at a higher bit-rate. Others have observed the same.
I suppose it will also depend on your decoder (player) and how it handles AAC.
