This year there were virtual reality devices on display at the CES. We've purchased an Oculus Rift development system. A good portion of CES booths deal with mundane stuff like iPhone cases and the like. My favorite room was at the Sands where they had a mix of new spin on the old, exercise/fitness equipment and the new, 3D printers.
I guess the point is not all new products are cutting edge - many, if not most, of them are just spins on previously existing products.
