A good system will sound more like music regardless of the recording than a colored one. Bad recordings will sound better and good recordings will sound better too (provided what was recorded sounded good).
If a system is not working this way it's colored or broken - now it might be colored in ways it's owner appreciates but it is colored (or not working correctly).
Even lower mid-fi equipment can differentiate recording quality - what differentiates it from good hifi is even more recordings sound real good on the good stuff. Gear that sounds bad is just bad gear. I understand the need to justify bad sound but to build a whole audio philosophy around it seems near retarded.
