The tweeters in my speakers were replaced because of a whistle/crackle only to find that the new tweeters did the same. That led to listening to other systems, all of which provided the same whistle/crackle. It lasted for a few months, but has pretty much disappeared over the past couple weeks.
I have hearing aides, but seldom use them. Trying them while the noise was present seemed to decrease it somewhat. Interestingly, when I first used them they seemed to make no difference in hearing high notes. Now they do.
