RE: This tinnitus sufferer's discovery.

I'm not really sure why headphones reduce the effect of tinnitus for me. Perhaps it is the cancelling of room reflections associated with speakers (though my room is a dedicated listening room, and I think I've done a good job of reducing room reflections). Maybe the proximity of the sound through headphones tends to drown out the noise of tinnitus.
I don't ever listen to music loud, headphones or speakers... though I wish I could!
But, in any case, the difference is not subtle.
