I think so. Seems to me, with an active system using transfer functions, one could chose their listening position in the venue.

This would require a format much more sophisticated than stereo with much more processing. I kind of like the idea for a number of reasons as not only does it have the potential to better reproduce "live" recordings it gives studio artists some new dimensions of creativity.
