as Stu mentioned Tuva is where this got its start. Often referred to as throat singers they have several techniques and styles all with names. Kongar-ol Ondar is perhaps their most well known artist and was actually on Letterman. As David says these singers can generate 2-4 tones at once.I have a lot of these artists and Sainkho is perhaps my favorite. Tuva is part of Russia and I was always amazed to hear these eastern Russians with much more Asian influence and appearance still pronounce the letter L like western Russians in Moscow.

I love this tune by Sainkho even though she doesn't throat sing in it. Sainkho does many genres of music including jazz and this tune is soewhat western and is produced by the late great Hector Zazou.
She throats sings along with other vocals on this tune.
