My take on this is that I think the store might have accommodated him if they had recognized him as a paying customer. If he had actually bought something there before and had asked them in advance about what he wanted to do, they may have let him do it.
I don't know if Dave Wasserman is still an owner of the Stereo Exchange, but when he was, I was always treated very well there. I don't go there as often as I used to because it is harder to find parking around there and they don't sell as much interesting used equipment as they used to. But I would still buy from them if they had what I wanted.
