RE: "...if played behind a curtain, it sounds like a person standing there."

It probably helps that we are naturally sensitive to the frequency range of the human voice and that the human voice mechanism does not radiate sound as a piano does - essentially being a "forward-firing" monopole mechanism.

A few people might be considered "bipolar" because they radiate sound from the back as well as the front, but they are a true minority.
