Some do, so don't. And, in real life, most communities in the US
don't have any brick and mortar opportunities.

Those that do, pay the seller less and charge the buyer more than
they would typically get or pay on audiogon or AA classifieds.
Just like when you trade in a car: The dealership gives you $11,000
and then they sell it for $15,000. When the owner does the deal
himself, he will almost always be able get something in between.
So the seller gets more and the buyer pays less than had they worked
with a dealership.
As for buying from strangers, it's never been a problem for me; the
same is true for the people I sell to. Use common sense: do your
homework, check out your transaction partner, and use buyer-seller
protection.
If you aren't quite noticing or accepting what is really going on in the present,
but are responding based on your thoughts or feelings about what ought to be,
then you are apt to collide with what is really going on.
