so no used equipment was around? no newspaper classifieds, no hobbyist newsletters with back page ads, no hobby mags with back page ads, no estate sales with the occasional jewel of a component, no . . . .?
in addition there was the surprise that could come your way - an older sibling hands down his or her hi-fi system, a buddy or neighbor tires of their system or it breaks down and you're handy with DIY, etc.
an added bonus: in the above places - talking USED stuff only as in my original post - there was more trustworthiness [except local newspapers] from the seller than in today's wild wild west of craig's list or amazon.
an added added bonus: you could meet the person or knew the person or knew of the person as they're in your area/family/block.
