RE: I've seen this defined two ways. . .

Craig, I don't know if I'll be able to read the whole thread right now but, to me, your point is quite interesting. It strikes a chord in memories of my youth. In those days I was both in college and a conservatory of music. My hobby was electronics, largely intent on building an audio system that I could live with...and afford. How freaking naive, LOL!

Anyway, I approached my challenge with a dichotomy of extremes:
a. The system as not-part-of-the-music. It has to be "totally transparent". It should not intrude or edit reality. Sure, technology will never catch up with what I hear day to day, live. Yet, there are beautiful gold nuggets, brief moments where a "known reality" can be richly evoked. Resist temptation. There will be bad sounds that "tone controls" could "fix"...but at the murderous expense of the naturally beautiful stretches that will get thus altered.

b. The system as-part-of-the-music. You already know that reality cannot be fully recreated. Do yourself a favor, allow the system to be just another part of the ensemble. Let it be an instrument that helps that orchestra, or voice or band, sound more alluring. Heavens created the "Tone control" for good reasons. Let the system and the music play as one larger ensemble.

I suspect that flexibility within these extremes is the sane thing to do. In a sense, my upbringing in music made me a slave of aiming for "a". I envy those who have more flexibility. That said, I can thoroughly enjoy "b" at times. While I am not able to sit and listen to it for hours, I can certainly defend its place.

Besides, reality is overrated; altered by all manner of production engineering. It really ain't there, bummer :-))

And yet, despite this..."reality" does sneak in here and there. When it does, it often stirs strong feelings, provokes silent smiles, tenses us in anticipation of a high note, makes us dance, makes us want to grab a reedy mouthpiece sound or textured woody note and freeze it in time, appoints us as "conductor" of that orchestra, turns our heads to the extreme back corner at a tympani's sweet behest, refocuses our eyes to each of the players...or, simply causes us to shed a tear at the overwhelming, if never-long-enough, beauty.

I suspect that the majority of us here know what I am talking about; I am not alone in shooting for "a".
