I had a similar experience with an ex-girlfriend. We were together for 4 years and in that time I learned an immense amount about music and listening as I was attending regularly (more than once a week) classical concerts (she was a violinist) and nightly practice sesssions. I also bought nice recording gear and made solo and duet recordings of her. My ear became accutely attuned to the differences in instruments and bows to the sound and to what real instruments in different spaces sound like.
My dislike for synthetic sounding hifi went from mere annoyance to outright intolerance during this time. I was also a reviewer for Positive Feedback for a few years and exposure to lots of gear showed me that there is stuff out there that gets much closer than most people realize.
A musical piece of gear will still almost certainly be flawed (they all are in fact) but its flaws will be ones of omission often or placed in a part of human hearing that is not so sensitive and thus sound more natural like we hear in real space with real instruments (recording allowing of course).
This is where I think a lot of gear (both SS and tube) falls down. Their sins are exposed in such a way that human hearing picks up on them and finds them unnatural. Distortion in high frequencies is a killer in this regard I think. Even at very low levels it can destroy the sense of space or alter the tonal balance enough or give an "edge" to the sound that would never be there with live.
