I've seen this used two ways:1) System sounds kind of euphonic. . . rounded transients, 'nice' pallet-able sound, nothing offensive, etc.
2) System sounds like musicians 'making music' rather than 'sounding' nice, the system plays with intent and provides PRaT when it is called for.
Most peeps probably try to balance the two.
In my experience, components which provide musicality according #2 above are less common than components that fall predominantly in the #1 category. Even components which exceed the audiophile 'checklist' can fail the criteria for being in category #2 above. In my experience, when a system gets you to #2 above, you stop thinking about 'the system' and it's shortcomings because you are caught up in the music. Your systems shortcomings (because all systems have them) become a non-issue.
I know some tool will come along who argues with my points above, but they are just my opinion, others are welcome. There is no right or wrong, only thinking that makes it so.
