Well, I guess if the budget is low enough then the DHT-SET could be compromised enough to be bested by something else. Given the glut of used gear on the market though I would think something good could still be had for a reasonable budget that bests all but the best SS or PP tube gear.
Don't forget some of the most expensive amps on the market are SS (Soulution, Vitus, DarTZeel etc.). Don't ask me how that is possible given that the only really expensive parts in a SS amp are the power transformer(s) and the chassis/heat sinks. At least in a Kondo amp you are paying for about 20kg of silver in a pair of monoblocks (the output transformers are wound in pure silver) and hand made components (capacitors and resistors)so at least some of the cost is understandable.
I did forget one class of amp that can give SET a real run for the money...OTL tube amps. The (big) downside is heat...they can cook you right in your room!
