A good example of the problem you mentioned is the bass drum on the Ansermet Petrushka (London 4 track tape). Here there is tape saturation distortion when the drum kicks in, but it is relatively mild when playing this recording at decent volumes using a Citation II driving a pair of KLH-6's. However, a Bose-901 was completely unable to play this recording even at a low volume level because the amplifier used crumped horribly when the bass drum kicked in because of the huge amount of bass boost used with the active equalizer driving the amp.
My present system has three amplifiers for each channel and a seventh amplifier for the sub woofer. With a clean recording of Petrushka (modern digital) the bass drum has no effect whatsoever on the other instruments. Perhaps it helps that I listen in near field with over 1000 watts.
