"Steal Away" may be one of the most personal albums by Haden who was brought up playing Spirituals, Gospel, and Folk songs; so these songs are at the core of his being. The collaboration with Hank Jones borders on the telepathic. These two men played this music as if it was emerging from their souls. It is powerful, contemplative and serene; a very special recording under any standards. This album also may be the best one to really hear Haden’s bass. The recording has the piano on one side and the bass on the other and the level is not cut on the bass so it is truly a collaborative duet with equal voices and each partner getting equal solo time.
