I don't know if that's a fair comparison....

Physical strength, reflexes and ability in professional sports is at a level that very few can ever achieve, never mind stay at that level for a number of years.

But a professional musician needs only to have the physical ability to finger the chords, blow the notes or use hands and feet to play drums. Sure, speed will likely go but not the skill, experience or musicianship.

I saw Bruce Cockburn in concert a couple of years ago, he has to be one of the best acoustic guitarists out there. He was 64 or 65 and his fingering and progressions were done without error, at least as far as I could tell. He plays with a fluidity and intensity that's a joy to hear and watch.

Oscar Peterson, despite a heart attack that he had to struggle back from continued to play with skill, passion and precision until his death.
