RE: Shindo Apetite integrated and Audio Note AN-E HE's...

I own the AN J and have heard the AN E Spe/HE. I don't believe the the AN J rocks better or is faster. What I think the issue is is that the E has significantly more bass and needs to be in a bigger room than the J. Otherwise the E could as some say "overload" the room. I have heard them in a fairly large room with the Jinro and they are unbelievably fast with huge impact bass playing Nightwish and the Evil Nine. If the room has a bass issue then it sounds slow - true of any speaker compromised in such a setting. Further the AN J is easier to drive. It loses a bit of sensitivity but according to Hi-Fi Choice's measurements the AN J never dips below 5 ohms - while the E drops to 3.6 ohms for a significant portion of the bass frequencies. If the amp is pushed hard (which will happen with a 5ish watt amp like the OTO (4.2 watts undistorted - according again to Hi-Fi Choice) then the amp is running out of guts when playing the AN E to loud levels - and bass is slugged.

The Jinro is over 20 watts and that makes up the difference.

Vandersteen speakers have a nice sound but they don't get the juices flowing - a little reserved and polite sounding. The AN E Spe/HE I maintain, when set-up correctly with similar level gear, is about the finest speaker I've heard at getting to the heart of the music. Where it errs it errs on the musical side of the spectrum and for it's designed room size (although I would go to the high side of their recommendation) There is little competition.

Every time I like another speaker a lot it almost always costs at least 50% more money. And that isn't necessarily getting better rather just something I like in a different way. For anything amplified or that has midbass of any kind, and acoustic instruments (piano, trumpet, sax stand up bass, cello, violin and voice) the AN E/J walks all over Magnepan IMO/IME.
