I sympathize, brother. When Listener ended I realized I was kind of burned out on listening to music analytically. I wanted to go back to listening to music that made me feel 20 again. It occurred to me that what I needed was a big dumb speaker that would play loud as hell effortlessly. I started looking at classic JBL L-100s from the '70s, and then discovered JBL's pro audio line. I bought a pair of JBL LSR-32 monitors, the descendant of the 4310 that was the pro version of the L-100. Pro audio is a highly competitive business with routine discounting, and I got my LSR-32s from Musician's Friend for $1200 a pair. I love them. They're not as forward as the '70s JBLs. They're very efficient with explosive dynamics that make most audiophile speakers sound broken, and they'll play loud enough to stun dogs at 50 yards. They're just great fun to listen to.
So, my suggestion is the same as Chris O's: go for a high efficiency speaker rather than a twee audiophile speaker.
