A car can only be understood fully and used to it's full potential by someone who has either extraordinary intuition, reflexes and eyesight.
OR One who combines enough of those with mechanical knowledge and even build skills, the latter type can grow into a far better and more consistent driver than most of the athletes.
Motor racing finds both.
At the level of ordinary consumer car driving there is a very wide difference in capacity, and situational awareness.
