So, if I understand your premise ... I need to know how to rebuild an engine in order to drive a car? Not sure I agree with that. I also suspect that it is possible to achieve a PhD in music theory without knowing how to play an instrument. What I can agree with is that playing an instrument most certainly can enhance your appreciation of music, but again, I do not think it a prerequisite to enable a deep appreciation and understanding of music.
