If you are being recorded than you are the 'artist' regardless of the actual artistic merit of your work.
I've got a number of friends who are recording engineers and practically everyone who comes through their doors these days asks to have their stuff mixed as loud as Green day or Metallica or whatever band is the flavour du jour.
No producers, agents or significant others involved.
As for the fans a couple of years ago I read about a study in which they played Rock, Pop, Jazz and classical listeners music of their chosen genre: One version heavily compressed and one with plenty of dynamics (of course the music was rms level matched).
The pop and rock fans preferred the dynamic versions while jazz and classical listeners liked theirs compressed and lifeless.
