RE: What do you do while listening to music?

When I have my JBL studio monitors facing each other, way further apart than those. When I unplug one side you can see both speaker cones still moving. The sound pressure from one side moves the speaker cones on the other. If both cones are hooked up and are pushing forward at the same time, I think the waves would impact and effect each other. In effect dampening each other. If they were out of phase one side would be pulling just as the other side is pushing. I do not think that is what they are designed to do to give pure reproduction.

We use to do something like that to cancel out the mono track to sing along with the tunes before Brian Wilson started the karaoke trade by putting out an LP with the lead track silent, so lead guitar players could play along. Later he put out Beach Boy songs with the vocal tracks left off, so that people could sing along.

Most stereo recordings have the vocals in the center. This means that the voice, as part of the music, has equal volume on both stereo channels and no phase difference. It works on the principle of phase cancellation, in which two identical but inverted waveforms will "cancel the other out."

I don't understand it all, but my sound man use to change the phase and that would cancel out the mono track. Then you could really hear the difference in both stereo tracks. My girlfriend could record almost any song singing against the stereo tracks. So I am just saying, if you do not set your speakers up as recommended by the manufacture it is going to have consequences.
