RE: I think it's the material

Some inmates tend to confuse "purist" with "high end" but that distinction should probably be debated in a seperate thread.

I'm fortunate enough to have two systems in two seperate rooms. My two channel system is a dedicated music system featuring tube amplification. I think that Frihed89 hit the nail on the head when he posted that it's the material that dictates the way most of us choose our gear. The vast majority of music is (and has been in the past) recorded and mastered with two channel reproduction in mind, so when we play it back it just seems to sound "right" to our ears. There are some exceptions, Steely Dan's 5.1 channel DVD-A version of "Gaucho" immediately comes to mind, but the vast majority of recorded music available today is two channel stereo.

Movies, on the other hand, call for a different approach. The audio impact that adds so much to the visual images that we see on the screen calls for a unique method of presentation. We try to reproduce what we encounter in a properly configured movie theater in our home environment. Room treatments are, of course, essential, but room correction (DSP, aka digital signal processing) is also necessary because of the way movie soundtracks are mastered when they are transfered to DVD or Bluray. I currently have a 9.2 channel home theater system that does a great job when employed to playback my Bluray movie collection but it's mediocre for two channel music reproduction other than as background music for parties or when I'm puttering around the house. A very interesting exception to that rule is the Unitel Classica Bluray boxed set of Wagner's Ring in 7.1 DTS High Definition Master Audio. This one has to be experienced to be believed, but unfortunately it's a rare exception.
