Dynamics

Just some thoughts on dynamics. I used to think that good dynamics meant something got loud. My thoughts now are no revelation to the members of this group, but maybe they are interesting to discuss anyway. Over the past several years, after finally getting a headphone system with truly good dynamics, I realized that good dynamics means getting soft, also. It means the ability to convey musical expression in soft music -- like a spiritual whisper -- rather than having the music just drop from your radar when it gets soft. As far as getting loud, the thing I would add is the music doesn't just need to be able to be loud, but rather be loud *with ease*. And a long crescendo should have a powerful and exciting effect as the music gets louder and louder. Finally, I came to understand that "macro-dynamics" are not the only kind: microdynamics are important as well. I define this as the ability to *clearly convey* small changes in loudness. It has to be clear so that it creates a lot of musical impact. It's not enough to hear small changes on the precondition that I listen closely. I have to be able to relax, and the musical expression in the small changes should wash over me.
