especially home theater receivers and that's the main reason I detest them. Cram everything into a box and if one thing goes it's a boar anchor - and if it doesn't have HDMI it's automatically worthless poo even if the amp was working. (So say the home theater Gods).
I don't hate receivers mind you - I plan on buying one in a couple of months - but I would NEVER ever spend large coin on it. Get as entry level as you can possibly buy and then in 3 years when it's obsolete sell it and buy a new one (get ones with 3 year warranties). Then you will always be up to date on the technology. And really the amplifier sections are not very good in any of them so you either buy sensitive speakers or an external power amp and buy the receiver with preouts for all 5-7-9 or 11 channels.
I am planning to buy the Marantz NR1603 (~$600). And I am betting it probably out-features and sound no worse and is more technologically advanced than any 8 year old receiver at more than 5 times that price.
