Take it to another tech and find someone who is willing to do a 'board level fix'.
It isn't quite this easy, but just changing boards is lazy. Can't get the board? pitch it, is the motto.
Now, as for expense. Since this was a top $$ machine back in the stone age of 2005, you should set a max to fix price IN YOUR HEAD. If the fix price exceeds your number, donate to landfill. If not, go ahead and get it fixed than sell it for fix $$+ a few bucks. or just fix cost.
I hate pitching otherwise good gear.
