We all have recordings that don't sound best with either polarity - or better - there is no demonstrable best setting.
I am sure there are probably more recordings with ambiguous polarity than correct but some are more ambiguous than others.
One wonders if the situation is worse when a solo mike is out of phase than a more general mike (sorry I do not know the vernacular) or could it be the other way around?
I know I tend to focus on vocals or solo instruments when making my choice. AS with all things audio I doubt this is generally true for us all.
