RE: Funny thing

While Arnie and I ended up having an argument in that thread, I have to side with him here. IMO, one of the main problems with ABX testing is that, in complex musical material, it's impossible to compare every facet of the sound in the course of a brief comparison. I think we've all had the experience of living with a piece of gear for months or years, and getting to know its every sonic quirk. That's the advantage of long-term listening. This way, if a difference is audible only with long-term listening, it's easy to listen for it during the ABX test -- and if the test is positive, you have confirmation that the difference is real. Which, really, is the purpose of an ABX test (and the subject of my argument with Arnie, since I maintain that an ABX test cannot demonstrate that a phenomenon is inaudible -- only that it can be heard, to a certain degree of statistical certainty).
