v.p. both of your points are excellent. the first one esp. may merit further discussion:
"but it continually puzzles me when people get so upset about something in audio that's expensive. I never hear anyone talk about how much they hate the car industry because a Bugatti Veyron costs $2.4 million. What is it about audio that makes us so sensitive to this? It's not as if there was a shortage of good sounding, affordable gear, so who cares if someone makes something we can't (or choose not to) afford?"
add to this example the housing market. there are properties for sale for mega astronomical sums, but we don't hate real estate industry because of this (not that there are not other valid reasons to hate it).
what is it about audio that makes us tend to take perceived over-pricing personally? i am in no way discounting this, i feel it too. it gets brought out every time i read an issue of stereophile and absolute sound. (even tho, as you point out, there is plennnnty of affordable gear available) the astronomical price tags on some gear bother us in a fundamental way. why is this?
