But art appreciation is timeless. If you need glasses to see the Mona Lisa, wouldn't you get the best glasses you could?
Now "Pet Sounds" ain't the Mona Lisa, and it ain't even the best rock recording ever. But it seems to creep on to a lot of top ten lists.
It's even mono, for God's sake (I know there is a somewhat fake stereo version too).
Does "Pet Sounds" sound better on a $15K system? Uh, yes.
Would you pay $15K to play "Pet Sounds?" Well maybe but I doubt it.
But you might pay $15K if you were buying a pair of glasses and the Mona Lisa was only one out of thousands of paintings that you were looking at. You might pay even more than that. The money isn't really the issue, it's a chimera.
Like I said, you get the best you can and roll with it. The high end exists because it feeds on insecurity. If I were poor I'd still have a good sound system because music is important to me. It might not be a $15K system but it would be good enough to play "Pet Sounds" without a problem. Been there, done that.
Do we really think that we are any more sophisticated than a kid with an iPod? Do you think that we could see more of the Mona Lisa with optician glasses than drugstore glasses? I mean, perception is elastic, to say the least. And the emotional response is incalcuable, if the listener thinks Lady Gaga sounds fantastic on an iPod who am I to sit on a throne and judge it bad?
So it really comes down to what it is, if you like what you have that's cool. If you want to upgrade that's cool too. Just remember the Mona Lisa. She'll smile for all time and not give one happy damn about what you or I do.
