Excellent article re. characteristics of live vs. recorded music

I've always been cursed with "hearing memory" such that I am always conscious of the huge differences between the playback of recorded music and the live listening experience.

I always felt the differences I perceived were mainly in dynamic range, attack and decay charecteristics, and (in smaller venues) fairly pinpoint "imaging", ie. hearing the distinct placement of instruments across the sound stage.

There is a very interesting article in this Nov. Stereophile about a sound engineer's experiences over the years regarding the above. For example, during the course of his work he would have occasion to talk on the phone while music was being performed or played back, and he noticed that people could tell whether the music was live or a playback of recorded _over the telephone_!

The article discusses some other very interesting common real life situations we all can recognize and consider regarding what might be required to convincingly simulate live music.

I found the article very interesting...
