to my ears, the best systems are blends of old and new- many of the great-sounding SET circuits that really bring music to life were designed by WE in the 20's and 30's, but they sound better with modern iron. Lots of the NOS tubes from then still sound best, tho, with some of the new models catching up. Older style non-sealed speaker designs are great, but fine-tuned with TS parameters and and modern pro drivers with shorting rings and incredible tolerances in the motors. Some of the modern phono cartidges sound much better than old, less colored, but the older top-of-the-line turntables can keep up with modern ones well enough for most people's tastes.
One of the problems with the march of time is people are paid to come up with new designs every year (or whatever), and they need to market them. Sometimes they're better, most of the time not. They still get promoted. One benefit of past work is we have insight into which products stood the test of time!
