It's worth trying. It'll depend on the driving capacity of the preamp, and the impedance of the headphones. I've tried plugging Sony MDR-V900 'phones into the line outs of a couple of DVD players; one seemed to drive them effortlessly, louder than I needed. The other was barely loud enough.
