...and I found the sweet spot by making adjustments and listening over several months.

When I first got the BBA I tried the gain and volume settings at the extremes and center positions just to hear what the differences would be, if any, and got an idea of the signal strength feeding the integrated amp. From there, I set it to what sounded like the best spot for sonics and volume and then just listened to a whole bunch of CDs.

After becoming familiar with that setting, would make adjustments to the tube gain, increasing or decreasing the level and listening for a while. I'd make adjustments to the BBA volume levels to see where the integrated amp volume attenuation sounded best (or at least gave me the volume attentuation range that I was looking for.) I did use a SPL meter to make sure I wasn't being influenced by changes in volume levels. That's one of the things I really like about the BBA, the ability to optimize tube buffer AND adjust signal strength so I can maintain a good range of volume attentuation.

Every once and a while I'll set the tube gain to minimum and then maximum and listen, just to keep a reference point.
