You want to use nickles under the spikes, not quarters or any other copper "sandwich" coins. Given enough weight and time, the spikes will slowly sink thru the soft metal in sandwich coins, eventually piercing them. Trust me, I learned the hard way. Nickles are still made of nickle, a much harder metal.
