I was just reading about the legislation intending to use steel for both pennies and nickels. Most modern pennies are already primarily of zinc composition as the copper content costs have sky rocketed.

Interestingly, you can buy at the Federal mints, say at Philadephia, proof coin sets still using coin silver (90% silver) and you can also purchase gold coins, but admitedly they are getting rather tiny.
