Strangely enough I always felt that the level of fit and finish of Japanese audio equipment was head and shoulders above US stuff in the good old days.

As an example, ever compare Yamaha with SAE?

Or how about Accuphase with Audio Research in the early days?

The list could go on forever.

Reading Audio Critic, Stereophile or Absolute Sound in the early days I always had the distinct impression that if a piece of gear looked a bit coarse but was very heavy then it was audiophile quality.

McIntosh had nice fit and finish and was scoffed at for decades by the audio snob press.

The Chinese are certainly not the Japanese when it comes to obsessing over fit and finish.
