The powered and operating CD player can radiate EMI/RFI, inject noise into the audio ground, and conduct noise back into the AC line to contaminate the power into other components (phono preamp, power amp, etc). This occurs at home and at the studio (EMI/RFI is equal opportunity :) ). I have not seen any data to suggest the suppression of these noise components are better addressed in studio versus consumer audio products.
