Distracting perhaps? In any event, it is the job of the newcomer to prove its worth. As for me, I have quite a few old musical friends in the form of vinyl. Could I record them digitally? Sure. Actually, I've done that with a few albums to experiment with the notion. It would take lots of work to do that for my entire collection and I really don't see the benefit. I've got two turntables and they work just fine.
As for multi-channel music playback (for HT, I find it quite convincing), honestly I'm just not highly moved. I've heard a wonderful all Magneplanar based MC system and while it is very nice, I think the additional cost - or the trade offs for keeping the budget the same for a 5 channel system vs. a 2 channel one - are just not worth the incremental benefits. To me at least.
And part of that no doubt is the result of my having a dedicated listening space for the main music system. I have been able to optimize everything for providing the best sound stage: minimal furniture, optimal speaker placement (8 feet out into room), optimal bass trap placement, wall damping panels, ficus trees placed at first reflection points, etc. Perhaps MC can work as well in a typical living room environment where compromises must necessarily be made.
