Congratulations, you found a way to tweak your system actively with the long forgotten "tone controls", once considered required equipment.

I seriously feel that the elimination of tone controls from mid-fi gear is a costly step backwards. As a listener I can recall the satisfaction of EQing my room with an ADC paragraphic sound shaper III, which I still have, (though with SE tube amps it's a different story).

The only way around EQ in my situation, is a mid/nearfield setup -- which loses the boogie factor of a room excited with waves.
