Oh dear! It seems that your hearing is in serious need of attention. Or possibly your "modern" comparison is Bose or some other pretend hi-fi.I had much, much better vintage equipment:
Garrard 301 turntable
Shure M212 pickup arm (double the price of SME 3009). Anyone remember this rare beast?
Vortexion tape recorder (based on Ferrograph / Wright & Weaire high speed deck)
Quad FM tuner
Quad 22 control unit with Quad II power amps
Westrex studio monitor speakers - good even nowand it sounded crap compared with good modern equipment. At the time, of course, it was the best sound you could imagine. It's the dynamics and imaging in particular that my modern equipment is so devestatingly better at that makes the vintage stuff sound so dull.
Oh - the penny's just dropped - you've been pulling our legs! Nice one.
