If you ever visit Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, take a day to visit the Pavek Museum of Broadcasting. There you can see, and perhaps hear, a WWII German tape recorder optimized for audio. They have a couple of Western Electric theatre horns, and the combination, with a modest receiver for power, makes one wonder if there has been any progress since then.
