I posted about a week ago about trying to enjoy all types of music on my system and how more modern pop recordings with too much compression are just unpleasant.
I took someone’s advice and found a cheap (on the order of $10) MCS series EQ (yes, that's the old JC Penny brand). I instantly lost texture and inner detail, however imaging and the overall presentation stayed about the same.
For what I lost, I gained a finely tuned tonality that I was really enjoying out of a very inexpensive pair of speakers. I was able to simulate a warm sound, with controlled bass and airy, extended highs. So I listened for hours and hours trying to convince myself it was bad... It was not. In fact it brought out a great deal of emotion in the music, both "audiophile" and pop. All this out of a cheap-o pair of speakers and an EQ worth 1/700th of what I have spent in building my system.
Should I be stoned, seriously?
